The cafe at Dundonald Castle
Has been compared to the proposals for ‘The Helm’ in Dunure.
There is no comparison.
- Dundonald Castle is a well established, award-winning venue
- The centre gets around £99,600 in subsidies per year
- Dundonald Castle weddings at run at a loss
- Community membership costs £10 for Dundonald, attracting about 7% of the village.
- ‘The Helm’ is looking for £30 from 32% of the village with few benefits.
The proposal is for no subsidies for ‘The Helm’. The plan says
‘the core proposition is addressed in this business plan
without operational funds from the public sector‘.
Right from the start it is clear that South Ayrshire Council do not intend to offer any ongoing support to ‘The Helm’.
The deserved success of Dundonald Castle’s visitor centre, subsidised every year by up to £100,000, would turn into a dramatic failure under the proposals for Dunure’s ‘Helm’ centre with no subsidies.
What happens if Kennedy Hall is closed and ‘The Helm’ closes due to losses?
Will the new ‘Helm Centre’ be sold off at a fraction of its cost to private developers? That’s what has happened to other centres across Scotland. What happens to Dunure’s heritage then?
Here is our analysis of Dynamic Dunure’s proposals for ‘The Helm’.
We need an open and fair debate on these proposals.
Again we repeat our offer to Dynamic Dunure to respond to our analysis and reassure the communities of Dunure and Fisherton that their proposals are robust.
